Health Care Aide Program (Government of Alberta Provincial Curriculum Version.2010)

Our class sizes are small, classrooms and laboratory are equipped to provide students exceptional learning opportunities prior to practicums. This combination leads to well prepared graduates.

Fast-track Full-time Program

This program is ideal for a student who is seeking a shorter and relevant program which provides the student the knowledge, skills and job experience of a Health Care Aide.  This program does not provide individualized learning pathway. Students are required to attend all scheduled classes, complete all course work, pass all exams and fulfill requirements for graduation in order to obtain certification. Students who may be unsuccessful in a course do have the opportunity to join supplementary classes. Supplementary courses are available for all core courses including basic care lab,complex care lab,foundation practicum and advanced practicum.

Program Duration

6-12 months depending on the student’s prior education,skills,career/professional background and life experience. Typically, students initially enroll in the fast track program. Students who may be unsuccessful in a course join supplementary classes. Supplementary courses are available for all core courses including basic care lab,complex care lab,foundation practicum and advanced practicum.

Additional Courses for Health Care Aides

Pharmacology for Health Care Aides-Part time

Health Care Aides working with some agencies have recently moved to the role of medication administration. The safe administration of medications requires sufficient knowledge in pharmacology and therapeutic use of drugs. This course will allow Health Care Aides to undertake medication administration with competence and confidence.

Health Assessment for Health Care Aides-Part time

This course provides the Health Care Aide  an overview of the 10 body systems and explores basic skills in data collection. Students will learn the Health Care Aide role within the nursing process, and explore the relevance of the HCA roles and responsibilities to reporting client data to the health care team for initiating nursing assessment and updates to the client care plan.
